Neural Networks Explained

We present a concise overview of one of the most advanced concepts of Advanced Artificial Intelligence on the topics of Neural Networks and Neural Processors.

Neural Network Technology: An Advanced Topic

The applied concept of a Neural Network is to model a data system to the structure of Neurons. With a networking pattern that mimics the Neurons of the brain, the use of Neural Networks has vast application uses including Artificial Intelligence.

These technologies have accelerated with the innovations of microchips. Many advanced tools have surfaced from Neural Networks including Image detection, Decision Making, and Self-Driving Cars.

Business Perspective: Understanding Neural Network Technology

The technology of Neural Networks is applicable to many fields that utilize technology, decision making, and Big Data applications.

From an outside perspective, Neural Networks are best represented by their use case. The mathematics of neural matrices isn’t the sole driving force behind their development, but rather the hyper-advanced technologies that have emerged as prospective innovations that can transform our lives.

Use Cases for Modern Neural Networks

Neural Network has advanced to the capacity to be applicable in real-time for many business applications. Software systems based on Neural Networks have been created for innovative purposes, Examples include Financial Firms using it to detect fraud, logistics businesses planning delivery routes, and doctors running medical examinations.

Most notably, early software prototypes for fully automated self driving cars has taken the spotlight as real-time image detection and pattern recognition become key Neural Network concepts that are applicable in new modern technology.

Feed Forward Network

Many neural network models are represented as a Feed Forward Network, a matrix representation of the network with exactly one output layer and one input layer that does not loop.

Back Propagation: Self-Driving Cars

The Neural Network concept of Back propagation has dated to as far as back as 1961. Specifically, Back propagation is an algorithm for artificial intelligence in the form of a Feed Forward Network that involves training a Neural Network model to weigh a set of decisions.

This is best simplified as training a self-driving car to weigh the decision to turn right or left based on the input it continuously receives through a camera. Each frame in the video is interpreted with a calculation on how much to turn the wheel, and the trained network will generate an output to propel the car in the right direction.

Limitations of Applied Neural Networks

As with the previous example, the challenges are within the scope of measuring the “Correct” answer for any given circumstance, and how a system should react with anomalies. Even the most advanced Tesla auto-pilot features have had instances of “phantom braking.” extensive compute power that may have physical limitations.

As the self-driving car seems like a Sci-Fi fantasy, current limitations withhold many automakers from implementing self-driving features. The extensive compute power and software requirements needed have created hurdles that have left traditional motor companies to compete or partner with tech giants such as Tesla.

Neural Network Pros

  • Advances Artificial Intelligence
  • Uses in Healthcare and other Data intensive fields
  • Fundamental to High-tech Software such as Self Driving Cars

Neural Network Cons

  • Very Data intensive
  • Long Time to Build/train applied models
  • Uses Large Amounts of Compute Power

Neural Processing Units (NPU)

The Neural Processing Unit is a microprocessor built to handle advanced machine learning algorithms. Often these microchips have to be designed with novel techniques that extend beyond conventional transistor technology.

The design of a Neural Processing Unit may include a combination of both analog circuitry and digital transistor technology.
